The Muslim community in Rome welcomed Ramadan Wednesday night while the city's municipality launched a shuttle service to the mosques in the city.

The Muslim community in the Italian capital of Rome, estimated at around 80,000 consisting mainly of Pakistanis, Moroccan, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Tunisian and Algerian Muslims, began their fast Wednesday night, marking the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The municipality of Rome also launched a shuttle service for Muslims to attend prayers at the Rome Mosque during Ramadan.

Redouane Abdullah, director of Rome's Islamic Cultural Centre, said there would be Qur'an recitations at Rome Mosque as well as conferences and meetings on interfaith dialogue and relations between Islam and Europe throughout the holy month.

Abdullah also showed an ancient Qur'an dating back to 1546, belonging to Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, exhibited at the mosque.
