Iraqis listened to a sermon on unity in the first Friday prayer of Ramadan in Baghdad Friday.

Muslim blood should not be spilled in Iraq. We must show respect for the month of Ramadan. We must stay away from every kind of fight, said Imam Omar Ahmad of Baghdad's 14th of Ramadan Mosque.

In his sermon, the imam called for the unity of Muslims, acts of forgiveness and goodness during the Islamic holy month.

The 14th of Ramadan Mosque is one of Baghdad's most ornate and well recognized mosques for Sunni Muslims, who entered their second day of fasting for Ramadan Friday.

Friday marked the first day of fasting for Shiite Muslims.

A vehicle curfew imposed on Baghdad every Friday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm has been lifted for the month of Ramadan.

Authorities also relaxed the nightly curfew.

Instead of coming into effect at 11.00 pm, the curfew in the capital will now commence at midnight, although it will as before continue to be enforced until 5.00 am.
