MHP seeks to entice Eskişehir mayor to join party

Following similar moves by the Republican People's Party (CHP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has taken action to ask current Eskişehir Mayor Yılmaz Büyükerşen to run as the party's mayoral candidate in the March local elections.

Büyükerşen, a member of the Democratic Left Party (DSP), has served as mayor of Eskişehir since 1999.

MHP deputies Ertuğrul Kumcuoğlu and Beytullah Asil secretly visited Büyükerşen last week and conveyed the MHP's offer.

"MHP votes in the center of Eskişehir are increasing every year. Thousands of MHP supporters voted for you in the 2004 local elections. We would like to see you in our party," the MHP deputies told Büyükerşen. Asil confirmed meeting with Büyükerşen. "Büyükerşen is a close friend of Kumcuoğlu," he said. In this regard, we paid a courtesy visit to him and talked about memories." He did not rule out the MHP's offer. "This is politics and unpredictable. Things may change from evening to morning."

Büyükerşen made a statement yesterday through his adviser, Oğuzhan Özen, about meeting with the deputies. "Kumcuoğlu, as an old friend, frequently visits me. This visit was one of those frequent visits. We did not speak about politics. I am still at my post as a mayor from the DSP."
