MHP headquarters announced that the image of Bahçeli was used without permission and that the posters violate election campaign guidelines.

KA-DER President Hülya Gülbahar said the posters aim to express disappointment regarding the very low number of women candidates in the local elections, slated for March 29. "We also wanted to share our dreams with the public; namely, having equal representation of women in politics, tolerance in politics and politics whose character is less confrontational," she said, adding that KA-DER did not intend to attack any of the leaders at all. Gülbahar noted that the number of women representatives in local politics is very low and that her organization had expected the leaders to encourage female participation in local elections instead of showing intolerance.

Women representatives in local administrations account for only 1 percent, though their share of seats in Parliament totaled 10 percent following general elections on July 22, 2007.

Although Turkey's political parties have started to nominate candidates for the upcoming local elections amid talk of increasing women's involvement in local administrations, there has been little progress to date in the cause of equality. None of the main parties have nominated women candidates for the cities yet except for the Democratic Society Party (DTP), which enforces a 40 percent gender quota and is the only party with a female mayor, Tunceli Mayor Songül Erol Abdil, as its member.
